AirTag is splash, dust, and water-resistant with a replaceable battery

AirTag is designed the way it should be.

What you need to know

  • AirTag is splash, water, and dust-resistant to a maximum depth of one meter for up to thirty minutes.
  • It features a CR2032 battery that will need to be replaced about once a year.

Today, Apple announced its AirTag tracking product which aims to use the company's Find My network to help people find their lost items.

Some of the questions surrounding AirTag before it was released were how sturdy it would be and whether or not it would have a built-in rechargeable or replaceable battery, and Apple has answered both of those questions.

AirTag is IP67 splash, water, and dust-resistant to a maximum depth of one meter (about three feet) for up to thirty minutes. This means that if you were to drop whatever your AirTag was attached to in the toilet or in a puddle, you wouldn't have to worry about frying it and losing whatever you misplaced. It also means you can rest easy if your AirTag gets caught in the rain.

AirTag is splash-, water-, and dust-resistant and was tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes). Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Refer to the Safety and Handling documentation for cleaning and drying instructions.

Instead of a built-in rechargeable battery, Apple is using the popular CR2032 battery that is widely available. The company says you should get about a year of battery life before needing to replace the battery.

AirTag is designed for over a year's worth of battery life with everyday use. The CR2032 battery is user-replaceable and widely available. Replacement batteries are sold separately.

AirTag is available to preorder on April 23 and will be available on April 30.
