Existing Philips Hue devices will work with Matter connectivity standard

This is great news for those deep in the Philips Hue ecosystem.

What you need to know

  • Philips Hue will work with the new Matter connectivity standard.
  • The company says existing products will also work with the standard through a firmware update.

You won't need to buy a new Phillips Hue light bulb to make it work with the new Matter connectivity standard.

As reported by Appleinsider, the Connectivity Standard Alliance announced the new Matter connectivity standard earlier this week. The standard is hoped to be adopted across smart home brands to increase interoperability.

When Matter was revealed, Signify, the owner of brands like Philips Hue, announced that the brand would support the new standard.

"Signify, the world leader in lighting and a long-term leader in the Alliance, is excited to be a driving force in the creation and adoption of Matter. We believe this multi-brand interoperability in the smart home will catalyze the benefit and value of smart lighting worldwide via both Philips Hue and WiZ smart lighting," said George Yianni, Head of Technology Philips Hue, on behalf of Signify.

AppleInsider has learned that the company also plans to bring Matter compatibility to its existing lineup of Hue products as well with a firmware update.

"Within Philips Hue, we are always looking to provide our users with the latest innovative and enhanced connected experiences with other smart home systems," said George Yianni, Head of Technology Philips Hue at Signify. "By actively participating in demos and testing the interoperability of Philips Hue with other smart home devices via Matter, we were able to raise the smart home experience with Philips Hue to the next level. I believe this single, unified connectivity standard will transform smart home technology from an emerging technology to mass household adoption."

If enough brands adopt the new standard, consumers would be able to purchase smart home devices with more confidence that they will work with other brands and ecosystems like Apple's HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa.
