What you need to know
- Some eufy camera owners are seeing other people's feeds.
- Previously recorded clips are also visible.
Restarting everything sometimes fixes things.
Popular smart home company eufy is in the middle of a potential privacy storm after a number of people began reporting earlier today that they are seeing other people's feeds. A number of people are also able to play back recordings created by security cameras, too.
People posting in the eufycam subreddit have been sharing their story for the last few hours, with some alarming goings-on.
Anyone else have this?
I checked my app today (from New Zealand) and noticed none of the videos were of my own.
They are from someone in another country (nice Mustang) - "Kangaroo Cam" alludes to being in Australia somewhere.
I can also see their contact details (as added accounts)
Is this a normal thing to be able to access anyone else's cameras?
I have 3 little children, I am very worried that others are looking at my cameras too.
Huge Security Breach Eufy - WTF
WTF indeed. Others also shared similar stories with one person saying that they contacted eufy security in the UK and they had no idea what was going down.
Other users have gone so far as to say that they will be removing their eufy cameras from use as a result of this issue.
Normally I would point to HomeKit Secure Video and say that users of it won't be impacted. It's a feature that some eufy cameras support, after all. But eufy requires that cameras first be set up on its own systems before HomeKit can be enabled, potentially leaving everyone at risk thanks to today's privacy breach.
Anyone looking to ditch their eufy kit would do worse than check out our collection of the best HomeKit cameras available right now.
I've reached out to eufy for comment and will update this post should I receive one.
