Apple Watch fall detection might have saved another life and if you ask Mike Yager, it did. That's after his watch called 911 following a fall at his home, summoning emergency services as he lay unconscious.
The story goes, according to local reports, that Yager passed out and took a fall on his driveway. His Apple Watch detected the lack of motion and called 911, with the Summerfield Fire Department appearing without Yager even knowing the call had been made.
"The Summerfield Fire Department showed me his log thing and it said, if I remember correctly, male, possibly unconscious. Then it gave the location and then it said reported by Apple Watch. Whenever he showed that to me, I was speechless. I didn't know what to say," said Lori Yager, Mike's wife.
Apple Watch Series 4 and newer monitors for movement following a fall. If none is detected, it initiates an emergency call and transmits your location to dispatchers. That's how the fire department was able to find Yager, and it all happened automatically.
Yager now thinks the Apple Watch saved his life, saying that everyone around his age should get one.
"It's kind of expensive but I think it's well worth it if you are over 65 or something you definitely need to do something like that. I'm 78 so I qualify," Mike Yager said.
